Location

Mitake shrine is located on the island of Ōshima 7km off the shore of Munakata city, Fukuoka prefecture, near the halfway point between Fukuoka city and Kita-kyūshū city.

Address is 2984 Ōshima, Munakata city, Fukuoka prefecture.

No admission fees required.

Shuin

The shuin of Mitake shrine is available at the shrine office of Nakatsugū.¥300 required.

Public transportation

The nearest station to Munakata Taisha Nakatsugū is Tōgō station on the JR Kagoshima line. It is about 30 minutes from Hakata station in Fukuoka city and about 45 minutes from Kokura station in Kita-kyūshū city.

It is about 20 minutes from Tōgō station to Kōnōminato-hatoba bus stop by Nishitetsu bus bound for Kōnominato-hatoba or Kōyōdai-roku-chōme. Buses are operated almost once an hour.

From Port Kōnōminato ferry terminal, in front of Kōnōminato-hatoba bus stop, to Port Ōshima ferry terminal is about 25 minutes by Munakata municipal ferry "Ōshima" and about 15 minutes by "Shiokaze". Ferries sail 7 times a day.

From Port Kōnōminato ferry terminal, it is about a 40 minute walk by a mountain trail starting near the Munakata Taisha Nakatsugū. It is about 1km long.

By Ōshima sightseeing bus "Grand shima-ru", about 11 minutes to Mitake-san iriguchi bus stop, and a 15 minute walk from the bus stop. Although the road from the bus stop is a paved road, it is a steep hill.

Also, express buses are operated from Tenjin-chuō-yūbinkyoku-mae bus stop, in central Fukuoka, to Kōnōminato-hatoba bus stop 3 times a day on weekdays, and 5 times on weekends.

Parking

There is space that a few cars could park in front of Mitake shrine. Also there is a parking lot for few cars at the foot of the mountain at Kaze-no-tōge pass, about 15 minutes by foot. However, Mitake shrine is on an island, so to go here directly by car, the car must be transported on ferry.

There is a pay parking lot near Port Kōnōminato ferry terminal, on mainland Kyūshū, so it is better to park here and take the ferry without a car. One parking lot is in front of the terminal, another two are about 5 minutes away.
