Dazaifu Tenmangū~Visit

A memorandum of facts about shrines visited. Dazaifu Tenmangū is a shrine located in Dazaifu city in Kyūshū. It is known to be dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, the god of learning. Location

Dazaifu Tenmangū is located in Dazaifu city, Fukuoka prefecture, about 14km from central Fukuoka city.

Address is 4-7-1 Saifu, Dazaifu city, Fukuoka prefecture.

Opening hours

The gates leading to the main shrine are closed at night.

The opening time of the gates are as follows.

Vernal Equinox Day (in March) to the day before Autumnal Equinox Day 6am
Autumnal Equinox Day (in September) to the day before Vernal Equinox Day 6:30am

The closing time of the gates are as follows. On Fridays and Saturdays, when Kyushu National Museum is open at night, the gates are open until 8pm.

Reception hours for prayers are between 8:45am and around 5pm.

The Hōmotsuden is open from 9am to 4:30pm, closed on Mondays. The Kankō-rekishikan is open from 9am to 4:30pm, closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Admission Fees

No admission fees required.

The Hōmotsuden requires an admission fee of ¥800, for general public. The Kankō-rekishikan requires an admission fee of ¥200, for general public.

Shuin

Shuin is available at the Shuin-sho near the Kisai-no-ume on the left of the Honden. A dedication of ¥500, or more if you like, is required.

At Dazaifu Tenmangū there is a custom of writing the shuin on the third page of a new shuinchō to leave the first and second pages open for Ise shrine. But in case it is your second shuinchō, or you don't have plans to visit Ise shrine, it is possible to have the shuin written on the first page.

Public transportation

The nearest station is Dazaifu station, and is about 5 minutes from Dazaifu Tenmangū. From Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin) station, in Fukuoka city, about 16 minutes by Nishitetsu Ōmuta line to Nishitetsu Futsukaichi station, change to Nishitetsu Dazaifu line, another 5 minutes to Dazaifu station. Some trains go directly from Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin) station to Dazaifu station.

From Hakata station, it is about 40 minutes by Dazaifu Liner Bus 'Tabito' from Hakata Bus terminal to Dazaifu bus stop which is in front of Dazaifu station, and is the last stop. 1 or 2 buses operated per hour on weekdays, and 3 or 4 on weekends.

Parking

There are 2 large toll parking lots nearby. Both open from 8am to 5pm.

The Dazaifu Parking, right next to the shrine, is available for 48 cars. Parking fees are ¥400 for the first hour, after that, ¥100 every 30 minutes.

The Dazaifu Parking center, about 7 minutes from the shrine, is available for 850 cars. The parking fee is ¥500 for a regular sized car.
