Dazaifu city, Fukuoka prefecture is a city located 16km south-west of Fukuoka city. As an imperial office governing Kyūshū called "Dazaifu" was located here between 8th and 12th centuries, it is an old city with many historic landmarks.
Dazaifu Tenmangū is a shrine is located in Dazaifu city.
The shrine is dedicated to Sugawara Michizane also called "Tenjin", who is known to be the god of learning. It is the head shrine of 12 thousand Tenmangū shrines around Japan, gathering more than 8 million visitors a year, and many students visit to pray for success in entrance examinations.

The Honden that exists now was built in 1591 by Kobayakawa Takakage at the behest of Hideyoshi Toyotomi. It is an elegant building covered with beautiful sculptures.

The plum tree on the right side of the Honden is called the "Tobiume". Legend has it that when Sugawara no Michizane was relegated to Dazaifu, the plum tree which Michizane admired uprooted itself and flew after him to where it is now.
